When should you choose paper tubes over rigid boxes or pouches?
Paper tubes occupy a unique sweet spot in packaging. Unlike flexible pouches, they offer superior physical protection against crushing, making them ideal for delicate items like glass bottles (perfume, serums) or brittle foods (cookies, crackers). Unlike square rigid boxes, their cylindrical shape is naturally stronger and often more ergonomic to hold.
Choose paper tubes if your product is granular (tea, coffee, powder), cylindrical (bottles, candles), or if you want to stand out on a shelf dominated by square boxes. They also offer a continuous canvas for 360-degree storytelling without sharp corners breaking the design flow.
How to achieve high barrier performance in paper tubes?
Standard paper tubes are breathable, which is bad for shelf life. To make them "composite cans" suitable for food, we adhere a barrier liner to the inner wall.
- Aluminum Foil Liner: The highest barrier option. Blocks 100% of light, moisture, and oxygen. Ideal for premium tea, coffee, and oil-based products.
- EVOH/PE Liner: A metal-free, high-barrier plastic option that is often easier to recycle in certain streams while still providing excellent oxygen and moisture resistance.
- Greaseproof Paper: Good for dry goods like cosmetics salts or bath bombs that don't need hermetic sealing but need oil resistance.
Embossing, hot stamping, soft-touch - which finishes work best?
Round surfaces interact with light differently than flat boxes. Hot foil stamping is particularly effective on tubes because as the customer rotates the tube, the light catches the foil dynamically.
Soft-touch lamination adds a tactile luxury feel that encourages the customer to hold the product longer. Embossing works well but requires careful tooling to ensure the pressure doesn't crush the tube wall; we use specialized mandrels during the stamping process to ensure crisp, deep relief without structural damage.
Low MOQ strategies for testing new products in tube format
Traditionally, tube manufacturing required massive setups. At Choco Package, we've optimized our process for lower volumes. To keep costs down at 500 MOQs:
- Standard Diameters: Stick to our existing tooling molds (e.g., 50mm, 73mm, 99mm) to avoid mold fees. We only customize the height.
- Digital Printing: For very small runs, we can use high-quality digital print for the wrap, avoiding expensive plate costs for offset printing.
- Rolled Edges: Simple rolled edges are faster to produce than flat-butt ends, reducing unit cost for small batches.
